Many struggling readers are reluctant to read because of the challenges in presents to them. According to Reading Rockets, “Graphic novels are a great way to help struggling readers strengthen vocabulary, build reading confidence and stamina, and develop a deeper appreciation of storytelling” (Reading Rockets, 2016). Graphic novels allow children to use picture clues to figure out difficult vocabulary words and also to better comprehend the language. Many authors are putting classical pieces such as Shakespeare and Dickens into graphic novel form specifically for this purpose.
Dav Pilkey, author of the Dogman series and Captain Underpants shares his views on graphic novels and how he used them as a tool as a student who struggled with reading due to dyslexia.
