What is STREAM?
As you may be aware, the next big push in American education is a program known as STEM. To prepare our children for the types of jobs that are in their future, the subjects of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics are receiving the emphasis they deserve.
The Diocese of Buffalo (the Department of Catholic Education) has introduced STREAM, which added Religion and the Arts to the acronym to include the knowledge areas we feel are equally important to producing a person qualified for the jobs of tomorrow. Since preparing our children for the future has always been a goal of mine, along with my background in Science and engineering, I am proud to be the STREAM coordinator for St. Stephen School.
We have completed our Spring sessions of STREAM Academies. We are pleased to have been able to h offer after school STREAM Academies (clubs) for each grade level:
STREAM Sprouts - Grades Pre-k and K
Primary Engineering Adventures Program (PEAP) - Grades 1 and 2*
Arcade Academy - Grades 3
Invention Convention - Grades 4, 5 and 6
Coding Craze - Grades 6, 7 and 8
What do the academies do? They focus on inquiry, creativity, complex thinking and are lots of fun! The academies emphasize STREAM education and nurture the innate curiosity of every child! They also provide a runway for our next generation of believers, innovators, scientists and leaders!
Elementary Science Program (ESP) kits are in the classrooms:
- Water Play, Astronomy, Earthworms, Minerals, Weather, and more.
- These kits include the materials and prepared lessons for teachers to use.
Watch for GearUp!!!
Students will be using Engineering Briefs to solve problems related to various core subjects. Students in grades 2, 5, and 6 will be completing Briefs in late May or early June.
Next year, all grades will be involved.
